Hazard Protection

Hazard Protection

At Arco we provide Hazard Protection clothing to suit a variety of needs and requirements when working with a range of hazards.

We understand the huge importance of wearing the appropriate protection at the right time and endeavour to protect you and your employees to the best of technological standards available in the market place.

Be seen and safe - whatever the hazard

Chemical Protective Clothing

To assist you with the selection of chemical protective clothing the EU has identified several "Types" of protection within Category III of the PPE directive. The manufacturer's CE certification to a particular "Type" offers you an indication of the garment's protection against your hazard: be it gas, liquid or dust.

PHS Besafe

The working environment can leave high-visability protective garments oily, dirty or greasey. Workwear is unsafe and unlawful if the bright colours and reflective tape are dulled by dirt.

Expert cleaning and care is essential to ensure they retain their protective and high-visability properties

PHS Besafe provides a specialist laundry service that ensures that high-visability garments are kept safe, seen and legal.

Electric arc hazards

  • What is electrical arc?

Electric arc flash is an explosion of heat, hot gases and molten metal caused by a short circuit of energised conductors. Common causes are by human error, examples of which are; the dropping of un-insulated tools, use of substandard or faulty test instruments and damage to energised cables or equipment in the work area.

  • What is the result of an arc flash?

    • Violent expansion of air and vapourised materials causing blast injuries
    • Extreme heat causing potentially life threatening and slow healing burn injuries
    • Very bright UV light causing permanent damage to eyes
    • High noise levels causing hearing damage
    • Toxic and superheated gases that can cause permanent damage to lungs

  • The test methods

There are two methods that currently exist to obtain an "arc rating" to protect from the thermal effects of the electric arc:

Arc in the box test method IEC/EN 61482-1-2

This test defines two conditions namely Class 1 and Class 2

    • Class 1 tests at short circuit current of 4kA and arc duration of 500ms
    • Class 2 tests at a short circuit current of 7kA and arc duration of 500ms

Outcome of the test is a simple pass or fail at these current levels and is used to define a basic level of protection.

Open arc test method IEC/EN 61482-1-1

This measures Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) in cal/cm² ratings. This can be matched directly to calculated incident energy in the workplace in the same units of cal/cm². ATPV must be greater than the calculated incident energy.

  • The importance of protection

By wearing the correct protective clothing (following a risk assessment), the wearer can potentially dramatically reduce the risk of serious injury.

  • How Arco can help

Arco always consider the protection of the wearer to be of paramount importance and there can be no compromise on safety or comfort. It is with these goals in mind that Arco introduce a single and 2 layer (top and bottom) range of garments to protect you from arc flash. The garments provide you with excellent levels of protection without compromise on comfort.

  • Our garments

The fabric and our finished garments have been tested and certified according to IEC/EN test methods described and certified to IEC 61482-2. There is a clear guide on each page to help you with your selection dependant upon the level of protection you require. However, these methods do not address electric shock hazards, effects of noise, UV emissions, air pressure, shrapnel or other possible projected substances such as hot oil, the consequences of physical and mental shock or the toxic influences of an electric arc.
