Types of Weatherwear

  • Wicking Garments

Anti Wicking garments are made from fabrics that assist in drawing perspiration away from the skin through the material, minimising the cooling effect on the skin as a result of dampness.

  • D.W.R Finish

Known as a durable water repellent finish, this proofing is applied to the outer fabric during the finishing operation.

The proofing protects from water 'wetting out' on the fabric and encourages droplets to bead and run off.

A DWR finish is not a permanent proofing therefore performance will reduce with wear and tear.

  • Interactive Jackets

Interactive clothing enables compatibility between outer and inner layers such as fleeces and soft-shell's integrating with outer shell garments.

3-in-1 garments offer multi layered protection against foul weather across all four seasons.

  • Fleeces

The majority of Fleece fabrics are made from Knitted Polyester which results in a lightweight, comfortable and warm garment. Fleece fabrics are not inherently waterproof, unless a water resistance membrane has been used in the construction.

Fleeces come in a range of different weights suitable for all weather conditions.

  • Soft-shell

Soft-shell materials offer improved water resistance when compared to standard fleece garments. Fabrics tend to be lightweight and comfortable, as they less bulky than normal fleece fabrics.

Soft-shell fabrics are most often produced using tri laminate construction usually with a TPU membrane contained within the fabric structure.

  • Breathability

It is frequently the case that waterproof fabrics are either coated or laminated on the inner face to enable moisture transmission from the inside of the garment through to the outer face.

This enables a dissipation of water vapour within the garment during wear, allowing for greater wearer comfort.

There are many breathable fabrics on the market the best-known of these being GORETEX.

  • Heavy Duty Rainwear

Rainwear that forms a robust resistance to wind and water in very challenging weather conditions are normally either PVC or Polyurethane coated and offer excellent durability in the most difficult of working conditions.

  • GORETEX

GORETEX fabrics are waterproof windproof highly durable and breathable and come in a range of 2 and 3 Layer options to suit most weather and work situations.

Weatherwear - Standards

Foul weather clothing can be found for many different environments where weather protection is needed.

BS EN343:2003 - European Standard for protective clothing - protection against rain.

The standard breaks down into two areas, the first refers to resistance to water penetration; the second refers to the water vapour resistance (breathability) of the garment.

A performance level of 3 being the highest standard.

Waterproof
  • Class 1 indicates low water resistance
  • Class 2 indicates average water resistance
  • Class 3 indicates high water resistance
Breathability
  • Class 1 indicates low breathability
  • Class 2 indicates average breathability
  • Class 3 indicates high breathability

Therefore the highest water resistant and breathable garment would read as BS EN343: 2003 3,3
