Aerosol factories warned over safety

Aerosol factories warned over safety UK-based aerosol companies have been warned to improve safety levels, after an explosion at a Merseyside factory killed one worker and injured three others.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is urging companies to be particularly careful when the changeover of propellant is necessary.

Commenting on the case, HSE inspector Keith Morris said: "HSE investigations concluded the company had not adopted good industry practice for the change-over of propellants and had not provided self-sealing quick-release coupling or flame-retardant clothing for all the maintenance staff."

On the day of the incident a trainee engineer had allegedly been tasked with starting up the factory's production line - with the HSE also reporting "significant" errors in the company's shutdown procedures.

"The sad circumstances of this incident should remind the whole chemical industry to ensure they have clear and accurate procedures that cover all aspects of plant operation," Mr Morris continued.

In other news, the HSE yesterday issued a warning to construction companies over the dangers of working at height, after an Oldham-based company was prosecuted over the injury of an employee.
