Arco has announced it will be the main sponsor of the historic Hessle Road Carnival and Pram Race and has pledged £9,000 towards the running of the event, set to take place on 14th July 2012. The funds raised at this annual event support the economic regeneration of the local area whilst bringing the community and businesses together.
The historic race, originally called the Fish Dock Pram Race in the 1920’s and 1930’s, came about when the wives of the Hull trawlermen at sea would rush down West Dock Avenue to the trawler owner’s offices to draw their husband’s wages. In recent years this event was revived on Hull’s famous Hessle Road as a way to promote the businesses on the Road whilst celebrating Hull’s vibrant history. The pram race is a great way of involving the local community in celebrating the area’s heritage and entry categories for the race include schools, churches, youth groups, pubs and clubs, and large and small shops.
In 2010 over 3,000 spectators lined the street to watch 17 pram pushing teams race to the finish line and the funds raised supported many local charities including the Network Young People’s Centre on the site of the old St John’s Church Hall. The 2012 event promises to be even more exciting with participants being encouraged to ‘Go for Gold’ in Olympic themed activities.
