Asbestos Still the Hidden Killer

Arco Offers Advice on Getting the Right Protection

According to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics, exposure to asbestos is still the biggest single cause of work-related deaths. Over 4,0001 people a year are dying from the effects of asbestos and a quarter of these victims are former tradesmen. Perhaps the most worrying statistic for today's workforce is that asbestos remains in some 500,000 buildings across the UK posing a deadly hidden danger. During November, the HSE is driving a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at plumbers, electricians and joiners who may not be aware of the dangers of asbestos exposure and who are working unprotected from this deadly hazard.

Steven Binnie, Arco's Category Manager for Respitory Protective Equipment says, "We cannot over-emphasize the importance of providing employees with the right protective clothing and a well-fitting respirator offering the correct level of protection, if we are to help drive down these statistics. In fact, employers are legally responsible for providing suitable protection to their employees but making sure that the protective equipment is comfortable is also important as workers won't wear poor fitting, uncomfortable products. We have a team of experts at our branches across the UK who are qualified to offer guidance on what products to purchase and who can provide an on-site face fit testing service for respiratory equipment as well as training courses on how to wear and maintain the equipment". Make sure you and your employees are protected from the dangers of asbestos, get the right advice from the experts. www.hse.gov.uk
