Asbestos warning for businesses

Asbestos warning for businesses Firms working with asbestos have been reminded that they are responsible for ensuring property health and safety procedures are followed.

Asbestos is recognised as the biggest cause of workplace deaths in the UK and there are clear guidelines about working with the substance.

These include providing relevant personal protective equipment such as masks and erecting safety signs warning that asbestos could be present on the site.

However, two contactors were recently fined a total of £220,000 after failing to follow the guidelines, leading the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to issue a reminder to businesses.

HSE inspector Nicola Surrey said: "Asbestos must be properly managed to prevent people dying from asbestos diseases in the future. If you are responsible for managing the maintenance and repair of a building, you must manage any asbestos in it."

She added that the HSE will take action against any company that does not follow correct procedures.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18721052-ADNFCR
