Authorities crackdown on 'exploding' ovens

Authorities crackdown on 'exploding' ovens Health bosses have launched a so-called 'curry crackdown' on the ovens used in tandoori restaurants following a string of recent injuries.

Tandoor ovens, which are used to cook meat dishes, have exploded because they were not properly maintained or installed.

Further to this, Birmingham city council found that only a small percentage of tandoor ovens in the local area had working ignitions and employees "routinely" lit ovens with burning napkins.

In fact, a random inspection of 27 tandoori restaurants found that only two of 27 used a qualified engineer to check their tandoor oven.

Councillor Neil Eustace, the chair of the Public Protection Committee, described the results of the inspection as "shocking".

He added: "The cylindrical design of the tandoor with an ignition source at the bottom, means that when gas builds up inside and an employee leans in to light it, the oven effectively becomes like a cannon."

In addition to maintaining the safety of cooking appliances, workers are also expected to use the correct workwear, such as safety gloves, to help minimise the risk of disease.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19625982-ADNFCR
