BOHS backs HSE guidelines for workplace hygiene procedure The British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) has lent its support to the new Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines on workplace heath and safety practice, reiterating the need for proper procedure for maintaining hygiene standards.

BOHS expressed its hope that the new guidelines will help to raise awareness of the threat posed by occupational illness and work-related disease, which cause as many as 159,000 worker fatalities in the EU annually.

It also outlined its intention to support the HSE schemes with public events, workshops and accreditation schemes designed to promote the implementation of proper hygiene standards.

Roger Alesbury, president of BOHS, said: "A steep change in awareness … is vital to counteract the current situation, where deaths from occupational illnesses are probably more than 40 times the number dying from accidents at work."

Among the measures recommended by BOHS to increase hygiene standards in the workplace are the regular washing of hands and the wearing of personal protective equipment such as safety gloves.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19203307-ADNFCR
