BSC calls for 'teenage safety training'

BSC calls for 'teenage safety training' British schools are being urged to make health and safety training part of the curriculum, in order to educate young people on workplace dangers before they enter the world of employment.

According to the British Safety Council (BSC), around two-thirds of British workers say they have received little or no training from their employers, "leaving 20 million workers at risk".

The BSC spoke out about the risks faced by young workers, following the successful prosecution of a roofing boss over the death of a teenage employee.

BSC chief executive Brian Nimick commented: "As well as the onus on bosses to do everything they can to protect their workers, there is a very real and pressing need for our young people to get the awareness training to protect themselves at work and this should happen in schools."

The government reports that 36 million days are lost annually as a result of work-related illness and injury.
