BSC helps disadvantaged students gain safety qualifications The British Safety Council (BSC) has joined homeless charity Crisis to help disadvantaged students take part in accredited health and safety courses.

The BSC and Crisis today celebrated as the first group of students received the Entry Level Award in Workplace Hazard Awareness.

Further funding will now be provided to enable more students to study for health and safety qualifications free of charge.

BSC chief executive Brian Nimick said: "These initiatives are really important to the British Safety Council as our key aim is to support a healthier, safer and more sustainable society. We believe that this nationally recognised, transferable qualification will benefit a wide range of people, especially those who may have few formal qualifications. It certainly helps to demonstrate their commitment to finding employment".

Crisis chief executive Leslie Morphy echoed Mr Nimick's comments and said that the qualifications were helping to get disadvantaged people into work and teaching them valuable lessons in safety.

Last week the BSC called for businesses to improve safety standards, after it emerged that companies lose £250 per second in "needless" payouts, as a result of work-related accidents.
