Bean sprouts are likely cause of E.coli outbreak

Bean sprouts are likely cause of E.coli outbreak Workers in the food production industry might have heard that bean sprouts were found to be the cause of a deadly outbreak of E.coli across European countries.

Tests run by the Robert Koch Institute in Germany found samples of bean sprouts from the suspected source of the disease were not positive, but links were made between hospitalised patients and the farm in Lower Saxony which supplied the tainted sprouts to restaurants.

Reinhard Burger, head of Germany's centre for disease control, said the contamination could have been caused by "poor hygiene".

Now the Food Standards Agency has advised those in the food preparation sector to implement basic hygiene practices when working with the sprouted seeds.

"It is a good idea to wash fruit and vegetables before you eat them to ensure that they are clean, and to help remove germs that might be on the outside. Peeling or cooking fruit and vegetables can also remove these germs," the agency noted.

The importance of using appropriate workwear in the food industry is to maintain hygiene and cleanliness. It is also important that the right workwear is selected in order for it to perform correctly under the right conditions. Arco offers a range of food industry workwear designed to perform differently under different conditions.
