Body calls for better crane safety A group has issued a call for construction companies to improve safety surrounding work involving cranes and has released advice to this end.

The Strategic Forum will make information available around sites which will enable the public to contact contractors with any concerns over health and safety, reports Building magazine.

With a number of incidents involving cranes in the last few months, the recommendations published by the body provide general information for crane operators.

James Purnell, work and pensions secretary, told Building magazine: "I'm pleased to see the way the industry has worked together to produce this important guidance - let's make sure it gets put into action."

It is thought that around 3,000 copies will be published and distributed to industry professionals.

Firms should ensure that the safety of employees is assured as far as possible, according to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

This may include providing suitable personal protective equipment, such as safety helmets or hi vis clothing.
