Breaching health and safety 'can damage business'

Breaching health and safety 'can damage business' The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned businesses that if they are prosecuted for breaches of health and safety legislation, they may suffer financially.

Representatives of the body stated that firms or individuals considering using their services may be put off if they realise they have been prosecuted by the HSE, reports the Press Association.

Tony Woodward, prosecuting inspector for the HSE, commented: "A company competing for work and needing to declare that it has been prosecuted for breaching health and safety legislation is very likely to have a distinct disadvantage."

Despite this he noted that it also works the other way and that those with a clean record may be a more popular selection for potential clients.

One way in which companies can ensure the safety of their workers is to provide suitable personal protective equipment such as safety helmets and hi vis clothing.

Guidelines on the HSE website advise firms to ensure that all safety gear fits workers properly.
