Broadened criteria for asbestos compensation criticised

Broadened criteria for asbestos compensation criticised Members of the Scottish Parliament have criticised the recent plans to broaden the conditions in which compensation can be claimed for asbestos related illnesses.

A House of Lords precedent disallows sufferers to claim damages from pleural plaques, although some Scottish MPs are calling for this to be changed, reports the BBC.

Those who have plaques have a benign scarring of their lungs, but it is not usually thought to be harmful.

However, it is thought that it can be a sign that cancer as a result of asbestos exposure is a potential danger.

Despite this, Nick Starling, spokesman for the Association of British Insurers, stated that the plaques are "inert biologically" and said that in themselves there were no obvious symptoms.

The Health and Safety Executive advises anyone who has to work with asbestos to ensure a safety mask is warn and that any workwear used is thrown away afterwards.
