Buildings and walls 'must be maintained'

Buildings and walls 'must be maintained' Businesses concerned with the health and safety aspects of their buildings should ensure that all workplaces are maintained properly and efficiently, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has said.

The warning comes after a toddler was killed when parts of a boundary wall collapsed on him during high winds.

Part of a wall bordering a residential estate in London fell down while the two-year-old boy and his childminder were walking alongside it.

A north London council has been fined £72,000 for breaching section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was made to pay £65,000 in costs.

HSE inspector Michael La Rose commented: "[The child] should have been able to walk down the street without his life being put at risk - tragically this wasn't the case.

"His parents are now facing life without their son because this council simply failed to maintain a wall which was in a poor condition."

Companies that maintain boundary walls could invest in safety helmets to keep their workers safe.
