Businesses 'unclear about health and safety responsibilities' Many UK businesses do not have a clear grasp of their health and safety responsibilities, a new study has found.

British Red Cross asked UK firms if they were in compliance with health and safety regulations and found that a large number replied that they were either unsure or that they did not.

The Red Cross conducted the study to evaluate whether or not companies were prepared for new health and safety legislation set to come into effect in October 2009, which would require more workers to be first-aid-trained.

Anna Brown, head of customer services for British Red Cross first-aid-training, stated: "Ensuring that your employees learn first aid is so much more than just complying with your health and safety obligations."

She added that workers would benefit from learning "important life skill" once they were trained.

The Health & Safety At Work Act 1974 states that it is the duty of the employer to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees, which may include suitable training or provision of adequate equipment such as safety signs or workwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18684768-ADNFCR
