Businesses criticised over company vehicle safety

Businesses criticised over company vehicle safety British firms are being urged to improve the safety of fleet vehicles, after a study revealed that one in five company cars are not roadworthy.

Of 21,370 cars inspected by the RAC, thousands were found to have incorrect fluid and tyre pressure levels and 16 per cent were without service history, Norwich Union Risk Services reports.

Adrian McCarthy, head of the RAC's vehicle inspection service, said that pool cars are often "neglected" and badly maintained by businesses.

"Fleet managers of pool cars should find these results alarming, as their own vehicles could currently be at risk of incurring high costs and scrutiny from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)," he commented.

Mr McCarthy added that 65 per cent of company vehicles are involved in accidents.

The HSE says there are a number of steps businesses can take to avoid vehicle accidents, such as ensuring that vehicles are kept clean and tidy, drivers are competent and that any necessary personal protective equipment is supplied.
