Businesses warned about risk assessments

Businesses warned about risk assessments Employers are responsible for ensuring that the people they appoint as risk assessors carry out their health and safety duties adequately, a UK trade organisation has warned.

Businesses are liable - not their chosen risk assessors - if safety advice in their workplace is not up to scratch, the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) said.

Heath and Safety Executive regulations state that businesses must provide personal protective equipment, such as safety boots, a safety helmet and hi visworkwear, where appropriate.

Geoff Hooke, secretary general of the BSIF, said that the European Campaign for Safety and Health at Work later this month would focus on risk assessment.

"With more than 200 people killed at work, and over 150,000 injured in 2004-05 because of a failure to manage risk, it is an issue that UK business cannot afford to ignore," said Mr Hooke.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18806828-ADNFCR
