Businesses warned to properly guard machines Companies that use heavy machinery in their operations have been urged to make sure they have suitable guards in place.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) noted that if risks are not adequately controlled, firms could have action taken against them by the body.

Kim Wicks, HSE inspector, commented: "The dangers of using machines without suitable safeguards are well known."

Businesses that do not suitably protect their workers from dangerous equipment could find themselves in violation of section two of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

This states that employers have a duty to make certain that "so far as is reasonably practicable" they ensure the welfare of staff while they are at work.

They may also be in contravention of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

Firms looking to avoid falling foul of these laws may wish to install safety signs to warn employees of the dangers of heavy machinery.
