Care homes in safety blitz

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to conduct a series of spot-checks on care homes in Somerset in the coming weeks.
Among the issues that the inspectors will focus on are hot water, unguarded windows and systems surrounding manual handling.
It is hoped that the drive will help firms with inadequate health and safety precautions to implement the necessary changes.
A number of Health and Safety Awareness days will also be held in partnership with local authorities in the south-west.
Trudi Smyth, HSE inspector, commented: "This inspection 'blitz' should give both us and the local authorities a good overview of the standards of the health and safety in care homes across the county."
However, she added that any breaches would result in action being taken against the transgressors.
In related news, Toyota recently published a set of guidelines for firms that require their workers to engage in manual handling.
Companies looking to further protect their employees should ensure that they are provided with
safety helmets and
safety boots where appropriate.
