Companies warned about falls from lorries

Companies warned about falls from lorries Companies need to do more to ensure the safety of delivery drivers, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has said.

The warning comes after a driver died from injuries sustained when falling from his lorry while trying to adjust the height of his load of metal telegraph poles.

Metal poles were a new product line for the business concerned and HSE inspector Jo Anderson said the incident showed why safety measures need to be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

"Companies must have procedures in place to identify new or changed products and the impact that their introduction will have on existing systems and procedures," she explained.

Ms Anderson added that the transport industry has a responsibility to take the issue of falls by drivers seriously, as 2,000 people are injured in such incidents each year.

The HSE recommends that companies keen to reduce the risk of employees falling from vehicles should liaise with specialist suppliers to identify the correct safety footwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18651614-ADNFCR
