Companies warned over the danger of flammable liquids

Companies warned over the danger of flammable liquids The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned businesses to ensure that employees are given adequate protection when handling flammable liquids.

Today's warning comes after a Leicester-based company was prosecuted and fined £10,000, after an employee sustained serious burns while handling acetone.

Leicestershire inspector Munera Sidat said the incident could easily have been avoided if the company in question had implemented a proper system of risk management.

Ms Sidat added that the company should have "made employees aware of the dangers associated with acetone".

"If this had been the case here, Mr Hirani would not have suffered such a painful incident," she continued.

According to the HSE, employers should have strict procedures in place when it comes to handling flammable substances and ensure that first-aid facilities and safety equipment are made available where necessary.
