Companies warned that cutting corners on safety is not the solution The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has warned companies against reducing their expenses by cutting corners on safety precautions.

Despite a decline in the economic situation and the temptation to skimp on safety measures, IOSH has stated that attempting to reduce costs in this way could have disastrous results for workers.

It is also appealing to the employers' fiscal sense by stating that failure to ensure the safety of their staff by providing simple measures such as safety helmets, safety gloves and hi vis clothing could effect their financial situation.

Ray Hurst, president of IOSH, commented: "[Cutting corners] will not only result in human tragedy but also have a major impact on the business’s bottom line."

The Health and Safety Executive recently reported that in 2006-07, 247 people were killed at work while over 140,000 other injuries were recorded.
