Contractors warned about licensing for asbestos removal Contractors in the UK have been warned to ensure that they are properly qualified and licensed to remove asbestos from buildings.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said it is vital to ensure that competent staff are brought in to manage projects.

Those who are properly qualified will know what personal protective equipment and workwear is required for this type of task.

Sue Adsett, HSE inspector, commented: "Contractors themselves [need] to ensure that they are appropriately licensed to carry out the work and that there are serious penalties for not doing so."

She noted that general builders might not be suitable choices for conducting work near or with asbestos.

As well as exposing people nearby to risks, workmen themselves could find they are unnecessarily put in danger when working incorrectly with asbestos.

Asbestos can cause a number of illnesses, such as lung cancer and mesothelioma, which is a cancer of the pleural and peritoneal lining.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19160579-ADNFCR
