Coroner to write to government about tower cranes A coroner looking into the death of a Liverpool construction worker has stated that he will be writing to the government about the safety of tower cranes being used across Europe.

The worker was killed when a 2.4 tonne counterweight being used on the crane fell and struck him, reports Construction News Plus.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded by the jury.

They were told that there was a massive overload in the crane that caused it to snap, resulting in the worker sustaining multiple injuries from which he died.

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has said that its investigation into the crane and the Europe-wide safety regulations surrounding similar equipment is ongoing.

Principal contractors are advised by the HSE to ensure that they fully assess and deal with potential risks on sites.

This may include providing workers with information on health risks and how to avoid them, for example wearing appropriate workwear, safety gloves or safety helmets.
