Crane collapse crushes people carrier

Crane collapse crushes people carrier A people carrier has been crushed by a crane jib that collapsed in Forest Hill, south London.

The jib apparently knocked over several concrete pillars as it collapsed and construction union Ucatt has called for an immediate inquiry to establish what went wrong.

The incident, in which nobody was injured, took place at a site run by Deco Design & Build.

Jerry Swain, Ucatt regional secretary, said: "Through sheer luck we are not talking about another fatality.

"The level of accidents involving cranes is so high that workers fear that there must be some kind of fundamental flaw in their operation or installation."

In the past seven years, there have been eight crane-related deaths, prompting the creation of campaign groups such as Families Against Corporate Killers and Battersea Crane Disaster Action Group.

Out of all the key industrial sectors, construction has the highest total of fatal injuries, according to the government.
