DIYers advised to buy proper safety gear A price comparison site has advised the UK's budding DIYers to invest in suitable safety gear before starting any projects.

Confused.com recommends that anyone undertaking work at home should purchase equipment such as safety gloves and safety goggles.

It has also advised novice DIYers to consider hiring professionals to do any labour they are not confident with or that involves electrics.

Simon Lambie, product director for Confused.com, commented: "DIY disasters can cost lives, send around 200,000 people a year to casualty, and the home repair bill costs in the hundreds of millions of pounds."

In light of this, he stated that it was essential to take care to minimise the potential for personal injury.

Professionals should also ensure that they conduct work safely, as was recently highlighted by the Health and Safety Executive when an Edinburgh pensioner fell through a hatch left unguarded by a contractor.
