Dangers of moving vehicles highlighted

Dangers of moving vehicles highlighted The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning to companies using heavy vehicles.

It identified pedestrians as particularly at risk from machines such as forklifts, saying that reversing vehicles could cause serious injury, even death.

The body warned businesses to make sure that they had conducted suitable risk assessments and taken the appropriate action to prevent accidents

Andrew Turner, HSE principal inspector, commented: "Workplace transport is one of the biggest causes of fatal and major injuries at work.

"Employers must ensure that workplaces are organised so pedestrians and vehicles can move around the workplace safely."

He added that arrangements should be made to ensure that people on foot could navigate their way safely in workplaces with dangerous vehicles.

Installing safety signs could help employees to realise where they are particularly at risk.

The HSE website contains guidelines about suitable personal protective equipment such as safety helmets and how to maintain them.
