Dangers of working on vehicles highlighted The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged employees and bosses to ensure that they take care when working at height on large vehicles.

It noted that safe access to the top of large vehicles - such as tankers - is essential and proper risk assessments should be conducted.

Robert Fraser, HSE inspector, commented: "HSE figures have shown that every week one person dies from a slip, trip or fall at work and every 25 minutes, someone breaks or fractures a bone at work."

He added that these statistics are "unacceptable" and said that companies need to ensure that they take all precautions possible to prevent accident and injury.

Mr Fraser noted that Workplace Transport injuries form a small part of accidents of work but said that they are more likely to result in serious injuries.

Employers looking to ensure that workers are not exposed to unnecessary risks may wish to provide them with safety helmets and safety boots when they are needed.

According to the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work Regulations 1992, all PPE should be properly looked after and fit staff well.
