Demolition man fined for endangering lives A demolition contractor has received a fine for allowing his son to work on a pub roof without scaffolding, it has been confirmed.

The man pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was subsequently fined £6,000 and ordered to pay costs of £13,483.

Leicester Crown Court heard how the contractor was demolishing a public house in January 2008, when he and his son were seen using just the upturned bucket of an excavator to work from.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that there was no scaffolding in place to stop the men falling from the roof, while it also revealed that there was nothing to protect the people working below.

In response to the court's decision, HSE inspector Martin Giles said: "This was foolhardy to say the least and could so easily have resulted in serious injury or even death. It is particularly disturbing that Mr Pope was willing to risk the life of his own son."

As a result of the safety risks posed by scaffolding, people employed within the construction industry are advised to wear safety helmets at all times.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19733852-ADNFCR
