Drying hands 'is as important as washing them'

Drying hands 'is as important as washing them' Businesses in the food industry have been reminded that not only should staff wash their hands thoroughly before and after touching food, they should also never neglect to dry them afterwards.

A spokesman for appliances manufacturer Dyson explained: "Damp hands can spread up to 1,000 times more bacteria than dry hands, so it is just as important to dry your hands as it is to wash them."

He noted that using paper towels impacts on the environment, particularly as washroom users tend to use more than one towel to dry their hands, while traditional hand dryers "don't dry hands effectively".

"Used paper towels, including the ones made from recycled content, can't be recycled, so they end up in landfill or have to be incinerated. And they create over 45 times more waste than hand dryers," the representative explained.

His comments come after research found nine in ten dishcloths used in kitchens harbour dangerous bacteria which causes food poisoning.

Food industry workwear could be worn to prevent cross-contamination in industrial kitchens.
