Employers should not neglect PPE implementation The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) has warned that it will prosecute in cases where health and safety guidelines, which includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), are not met.

Chairwoman of the HSC committee Judith Hackitt said: "We use a range of enforcement measures to tackle workplace ill-health and injuries and we do not hesitate to prosecute where necessary.

"The rising enforcement figures show that negligence in workplace health and safety is not tolerated."

Ms Hackitt made her comments in conjunction with new figures relating to the number of accidents in the workplace.

According to the statistics, over 140,000 reports were made relating to workplace accidents which resulted in injuries, for example broken limbs and burns.

One of the "key facts" mentioned in the report said that 2037 people died from mesothelioma, a disease common among those suffering exposure to asbestos, in 2005.
