Employers urged to not cut back on safety training Employers should not risk the potential consequences of cutting back expenditure on health and safety, an industry expert has said.

Speaking to Food Manufacturer, the expert said cutting back on safety training and risk management spending would be a "short-sighted strategy that could have serious long-term consequences".

The report cited figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which showed that there were 1,989 injuries in the food, drink and tobacco sector in the second quarter of 2008, which was 11 per cent down on the same period the previous year.

Such a reduction suggests that employees are less at risk when firms comply with legislation such as the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992.

Under this legislation, employers are expected to provide workers with safety equipment and clothing, such as safety helmets and safety gloves.

Firms could be fined up to £20,000 for cutting back on risk management measures or safety training under the Health and Safety Offences Act, which will become effective from January 16th.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18956744-ADNFCR
