Employers urged to strike the right balance on safety A recent study published by the House of Commons work and pensions committee has accused some employers of being "overly cautious", when it comes to health and safety.

According to a report by Norwich Union, MPs claim that a "lack of legal clarity", where health and safety legislation is concerned, is causing some British companies to "over-interpret" the rules.

Commenting on the findings, government minister Lord McKenzie said he agreed that there was a problem and would look into possible solutions.

"We therefore recommend that the government, in consultation with the IOSH, introduces recognised accreditation for health and safety consultants and advisers, with appropriate sanctions for malpractice," the report stated.

The Institution of occupational Health and Safety recently called for health and safety training to be incorporated into business management courses.
