Employers warned on use of machinery

Employers warned on use of machinery Companies must ensure risk management procedures are followed by employees using machinery, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned.

Moving parts can pose a potentially serious threat to workers, as limbs can be trapped - resulting in amputation, the body said.

The use of equipment like safety gloves and safety signs is widely adopted by many firms who are aware of the potential dangers of workplace equipment.

However, HSE investigating inspector Ritchie McCrae says all appropriate precautions and safety guards on moving machinery must be followed.

"Ignoring a specifically identified risk is not just reckless but blatantly ignores the safety of employees and is a fundamental failure by the company," he said.

The warning echoes that made by HSE inspector Martin Kneebone, who last month advised companies to check that proper guards are fitted to equipment to restrict access to dangerous parts of machinery.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19011062-ADNFCR
