Engineering company fined after worker's fingers severed An employee at a Caerphilly company suffered serious injuries after his fingers were severed in an unguarded machine.

The firm was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after the incident in which the worker lost four fingers and the top of his thumb.

The 25-year-old was working on a machine used to mill titanium plates when the incident occurred.

Although he was able to have three of his fingers reattached by surgeons, his injuries remain severe and he is continuing to receive treatment.

The company pleaded guilty to a charge under Regulation 11 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and was fined £8,000 with £2,000 costs.

Steve Curry, a HSE inspector, commented: "Employers have a legal duty to ensure that when employees are working with machinery, adequate guarding is provided to prevent workers being injured."

In addition to this, businesses are also required to provide their employees with appropriate workwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19890100-ADNFCR
