Equipment hire firm joins with HSE

Equipment hire firm joins with HSE Speedy Hire, one of the UK's largest equipment hire firms, has joined forces with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to encourage ladder safety.

The firm has announced that it will offer companies in the north-west the opportunity to swap defective equipment for new ones at a discounted price, reports the Manchester Evening News.

With 101 Speedy Hire depots in the region, the HSE is hoping that businesses will take advantage of the offer, particularly as spot-checks will be conducted on construction sites.

It is thought that faulty or broken ladders cost the UK economy £60 million in the past year, with 1,200 sustaining injuries through inadequate equipment.

Steve Winward, managing director of the company, commented: "Statistics from the HSE demonstrate the need for more safety awareness when working at heights."

Last year's Ladder Exchange drive saw over 4,000 "dodgy" ladders confiscated by the HSE.

Companies looking to ensure the continued protection of their staff should install safety signs in dangerous areas and provide safety helmets where work is conducted at height, according to guidelines on the HSE website.
