FSAI warns shops and cafes to keep strict hygiene The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has urged businesses involved in food preparation, particularly ready-to-eat sandwiches, to ensure that strict hygiene standards are maintained.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), an outbreak of salmonella in the UK in which 60 people have contracted a new strain of the illness prompted the reminder, reports the Press Association.

Men were found to be the most affected, with 58 per cent of all cases being males aged one to 79.

In addition to this, the Republic of Ireland has reported a further eight cases in the last two months, with sufferers reporting diarrhoea and vomiting.

The origins of the outbreak are currently being investigated by the HPA and FSAI.

One way firms may be able to reduce the risk of contamination in their products is to ensure that employees have food industry workwear that is clean and appropriate to the task.

Companies will now have access to more advice on food safety training in a scheme set up by Improve and the Food Standards Agency.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18718611-ADNFCR
