Farmer in accident 'should have worn appropriate workwear' The Heath and Safety Executive inspector who looked into the death of a farmer stated that the agriculturalist should have worn more appropriate workwear when conducting maintenance on his vehicle.

It was found that the man's machine was without a guard for the power take off (PTO) shaft and that his clothing had got caught in the machinery.

This resulted in him to become entangled and losing an arm and sustaining injuries to his spine, reports the Tyrone Times.

He died at the scene of the accident after being found by his son.

Harry Carr, the inspector involved in the case, told the court that he had found clothing wrapped around the PTO shaft.

Mr Carr stated that good working practice would have been to "wear close fitting clothing like a boiler suit to protect your clothing and yourself.

"There are no loose bits, nothing to catch on," he added

In related news, a company in Coine was recently fined £4,000 for failing to provide proper machine guards and conduct risk assessment which led to the two workers sustaining hand injuries.
