Farmers issued with safety advice for the harvest season The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued safety advice to farmers to help prevent accidents and injuries during the harvest season.

It recommends that agricultural workers take particular care when working with any heavy machinery.

If a breakdown occurs due to a blockage in the mechanism, the inspectorate emphasised the importance of ensuring that the machine is properly turned off and that the handbrake is applied.

The HSE also encourages suitable checks are made to ensure that equipment has fully stopped before any fixed guards are removed for maintenance.

Mike Walters, HSE inspector, commented: "Clearly the nature of farm work carries more inherent risk than most other occupations …[including] heavy machinery, the use of chemicals … and working at heights."

Employers of labourers on farms should note that the Health and Safety at Work 1974 requires them to ensure the safety, health and welfare of all employees.

This may include the provision of personal safety equipment such as safety helmets, safety gloves and hi vis clothing.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18734944-ADNFCR
