Fire training 'essential for restaurant staff'

Fire training 'essential for restaurant staff' Business owners in the food industry have been reminded to ensure their fire alarms are in working order and the risk of a blaze has been thoroughly assessed, with steps taken to avoid such an occurrence.

A Thai restaurant in Wokingham was found to have breached fire safety regulations on 12 counts and the former joint proprietor was fined £8,600 as a result.

Info4fire.com reported that the eatery, which also served as accommodation for members of staff, had had its smoke detectors covered with clingfilm and escape routes blocked.

There was no adequate risk assessment to guard against the possibility of a blaze breaking out, nor was there proper fire evacuation training for employees.

David Walden, technical fire safety legal support manager at Royal Berkshire Fire Authority, told the news source: "This was a sustained and blatant refusal to meet statutory requirements to ensure the premises was provided with adequate fire safety measures.

"Staff and customers are entitled to feel safe when working at or visiting a restaurant or any other business," he added.

Safety signs put up in workplaces could direct staff to nearby exit points in the event of a fire.
