Firms must 'prioritise health and safety of employees' With the new Corporate Manslaughter Act passed recently, businesses must make certain that the health and safety of their staff is at the top of their list of concerns.

At least this is the opinion expressed by Pierre-Emmanuel Tetaz, managing director for Etap-on-line when writing for SMEweb.com, who stated that firms could face serious penalties if fall short of the new requirements.

The legislation came into force on April 6th and those that are found to be negligent leading to an employee's death could face severe fines, according to Mr Tetaz.

Companies could be liable to pay a minimum sum amounting to five per cent of their annual turnover.

He commented: "The full impact of the act is impossible to predict but it is becoming apparent that the health and safety of employees must move up the priority lists of all businesses."

Firms that want to ensure that they are in full compliance with the new requirements may wish to look on the HSE website, where there are guidelines about the correct use and storage of personal protective equipment such as safety helmets and safety boots.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18753703-ADNFCR
