Firms should consider the risks of using machinery

Firms should consider the risks of using machinery Companies have been advised to ensure they properly consider all of the risks associated with using machinery.

This, said the Health and Safety Executive, would help them to assess risks and establish what safety measures need to be taken, such as the provision of hearing protection or safety gloves.

Jenny Skeldon, HSE investigating inspector, warned: "Even in companies that generally have a responsible attitude to health and safety, serious injuries such as amputation can easily result when limbs … become entangled in rotating parts of machinery."

She said that companies should be well aware of the dangers associated with machinery and the hazards workers are exposed to if suitable safeguards are not set up.

Guidelines for best practice and use of personal protective equipment on the HSE website suggest that employers ensure that all safety gear fits properly and is well maintained.

These measures should help prevent companies from being found in breach of the PPE at Work Regulations 1992.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19151340-ADNFCR
