Firms urged to use protective equipment when handling chemicals A new campaign has been launched by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to highlight new chemicals legislation.

The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (Reach) campaign, aims to make companies aware of the importance of enforcing the use of personal protective equipment when dealing with chemicals.

Inspector for the HSE in the north-east Richard Bishop comments: "The regulations apply to a host of familiar things that we all have contact with - metals, glues, paints, solvents, detergents, plastics, polishes, pens, computers to name but some."

North-east companies are the main focus of the campaign, with a free briefing for related companies - especially recommended for managing directors, buyers and health and safety advisors - being held today (April 17th) in Newcastle.

The wearing of personal protective equipment is recommended for a range of procedures in the chemicals sector, including bulk delivery, storage, dispensing and transportation.
