Firms warned not to cut back on employee safety

Firms warned not to cut back on employee safety Employers must not reduce their spending on health and safety training because of the current economic climate, an industry official has said.

Brian Nimick, chief executive of the British Safety Council (BSC), said by cutting back on health and safety spending, employers would put their workers at far greater risk of injury or ill health.

He noted that 229 people were killed in the workplace last year and reminded firms that cut backs in safety resources could lead to unnecessary deaths and injuries.

Mr Nimick said: "Health and safety at work is about protecting people's lives and well-being."

Workers should be able to return to their family and loved ones at the end of a working day as fit and well as when they left the home that morning, he added.

Employers can be fined for being in breach of PPE (personal protective equipment) at Work Regulations 1992.

To avoid this and to encourage a healthy safety culture in British workplaces, firms are expected to provide staff with necessary safety equipment and clothing, such as safety gloves and safety helmets.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18963810-ADNFCR
