Firms warned on consequences of ignoring safety warnings Firms have been warned that they could face serious consequences in court if they fail to adhere to health and safety legislation.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said employers need to realise the effect breaching legislation could have on their future.

Amanda Huff, HSE inspector, said: "Ignoring legislation puts people's lives at risk and can lead to serious consequences in court."

Her comments come after the Health and Safety Offences Act 2008 was made effective from January 16th.

This legislation gives courts the power to issue fines of up to £20,000 as well as prison sentences for serious breaches of the law.

To encourage a safe working atmosphere and ensure they are legally compliant, employers should provide basic equipment, such as appropriate workwear or safety gloves, to protect their staff.

Last month HSE inspector Paul Robinson said any tasks where staff are required to work at height also need to be fully planned and supervised.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18996067-ADNFCR
