Food businesses 'should display hygiene rating'

Food businesses 'should display hygiene rating' Businesses in the food industry should be required by law to display their food hygiene rating as part of a nationwide system, a health and safety consultancy has claimed.

Sarah Daniels, co-founder of Redcat.gb.com, said displaying a copy of the inspection report would "give clarity and transparency and allow the customer to make a very informed choice".

With the thought of having to exhibit their rating, staff in restaurants, cafes, hotels and takeaway joints could be more willing to don food industry workwear and ensure they keep the place clean.

"It's not just the bacteria - but chemical, physical and allergen contamination. Compliance, including less food wastage, better score [and] better reputation means the business is more profitable," Ms Daniels added.

Her comments came after the Welsh Assembly government announced it would consult on draft legislation to make it compulsory for food businesses to display their hygiene rating at the end of this year.
