Food businesses closed due to health risks

Food businesses closed due to health risks The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has closed down seven premises in the country due to failures to meet health and safety requirements.

After officials discovered that there was a "grave and immediate danger" the sites - which included a shop, food stalls and restaurants - were served with orders to shut, reports the Press Association.

Dr John O'Brien, chief executive of the FSAI, commented: "The need to issue a closure order undermines consumer confidence in food safety which affects not only the premises involved, but the food industry as a whole."

He added that it was necessary for firms to make sure that food safety was properly addressed to prevent any further action of this sort.

Companies in the food sector should ensure that they provide their employees with suitable food safety workwear.

In 2006, the Food Hygiene regulations came into force, requiring firms to identify hazards that need to be eliminated and ensure that they are properly controlled.
