Food companies in West Midlands to receive hygiene grades

Food companies in West Midlands to receive hygiene grades A West Midlands council has introduced a grading system to ascertain where the most hygienic food companies are located.

Halesowen News reports that Sandwell Council has launched its Food Hygiene Rating System to help consumers choose where to purchase food and drink or dine out.

This could spur food preparation companies in the area into purchasing food spill kits so their kitchens are safe and hygienic places to store and serve meals.

Councillor Mahboob Hussain, executive cabinet member, told the newspaper: "What this scheme also does is encourage businesses in Sandwell to improve hygiene standards. The message to them is 'good hygiene is good for business'."

Deputy chair of the Food Standards Agency, Dr Ian Reynolds, added: "It's great news that Sandwell Council is the latest to launch this new national scheme. Around one million people suffer from food poisoning every year and our aim in introducing the scheme is to reduce this number."
