Former IOSH president calls for occupational health rethink Health-related illnesses cost the UK up to £100 billion a year and yet there are not enough occupational health physicians working in the country, a senior health and safety executive has claimed.

Neil Budworth, former president of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), made these claims in a speech at the recent Safety and Health Expo 2011.

He estimated that reducing work-related illnesses should be a priority, whether that is done through installing additional safety signs or issuing more appropriate workwear.

Furthermore, the former IOSH president bemoaned the fact that there are only 1,500 dedicated occupational physicians working in the UK at the moment.

However, Mr Budworth, who is currently corporate health and safety manager for E.On, said that risk assessment is one area where significant progress has been made.

"We are good at the 'early identification' bit - doing assessments, evaluating risks, and educating people. We know that the sooner you get in there, the more impact you have," he said.ADNFCR-1200-ID-800548966-ADNFCR
